frequently asked questions

frequently asked questions

What is your teacher to child ratio?

The Early Childhood Regulations 2008 recommends 1:5 in an infant and toddler centre. At Tiny Tots we believe in quality, not quantity. The teacher child ratio is 1:4 at times the ratio is 1:3. The Preschool has a teacher ratio of 1:8. This is higher than the Early Childhood Regulations 2008 1:10 ratio.

How many children are in the centre?

Tiny Tots is licensed for 14 infants and toddlers 0-2 years of age and 1 toddler 2-3 years of age.

How many visits should I make before my child starts preschool?

Parents know their children best and how they will respond in new environments. Generally at Tiny Tots we recommend the more visits you can have with your child the easier the transition will be for him/her. This allows time for your child to build a relationship with his / her key teacher and to feel familiar with and comfortable in the environment. It is important to us the transition is a positive experience for both infant / toddler and parent/s. With Preschool we recommend minimum 3 visits and as I said above parents know their child best and how they respond to new experiences. We talk closely with the parents and work in what they think is best for their child.

When should I visit?

You are welcome to visit any time on any day that is convenient to you. Most parents tend to visit on the day their child will be enrolled to establish routines.

What do I need to bring to the centre with my child?

  • Named bottles of formula or expressed breast milk
  • Drink cup or drink bottle
  • A lunch box with snacks for morning and afternoon tea and a lunch, as needed. We encourage healthy eating habits, for example, fruit, vegetables, sandwiches, cheese, crackers, last nights dinner, or yoghurt.
  • A change of clothing (named).
  • Nappies
  • Wet wipes
  • Sun hat (summer)
  • Warm hat (winter)
  • Shoes
  • Gumboots
  • Jacket or Coat

Both centres will provide sunscreen. If your child has an allergy to conventional sunscreen, please provide your own sunscreen. During the summer months we do ask parents to apply sunscreen to their child before they arrive at Tiny Tots or Preschool. The Cancer Society recommend sunscreen should be applied for a minimum 15 minutes before exposure to the sun.

Can I bring nuts or peanut butter sandwiches?

No. Because children with nut allergies have a potentially life threatening condition, our centres are nut-free centres.

What happens if my child becomes unwell during the day?

Please read the Child and Adult Health Policy. You will be notified and asked to collect your child. A teacher will be with your child until a parent or family member collects him or her.

How will my child’s learning be documented?

Every child has a Learning Journey Book. Your child’s key teacher will be responsible for gathering stories and photos that celebrate all the wonderful and exciting learning experiences that your child is having here.
